Homeschool Help

Homeschool materials you will ACTUALLY use

“Back to school” signs everywhere and advertisements that catch the eyes of the moms of school-aged children all around the country. You see the cutest supplies that can be customized for each of your littles, and it is so hard to decide which things you simply want and really need. What homeschool materials are actually necessary?

Honestly, part of the fun of starting a new year is finding all the pencils, pretty binders, planners, stickers, and pens. I would not want to rob you of that 😉 At the same time, I do want to offer a list of homeschool materials that you will actually need.

With no further adieu, here is a list of materials your kids will ACTUALLY use!

For grades 1st-6th:

  1. blank paper (either spiral notebooks or a binder with loose-leaf paper)
  2. pencils (a friend of mine chose to purchase bigger pencils that were easier for her child to use which I thought was neat!)
  3. pens (different colors can make it fun)
  4. subject dividers
  5. erasers
  6. crayons
  7. pencil sharpener (if necessary)
  8. construction paper
  9. rulers
  10. dry erase boards and pens
  11. folders
  12. glue
  13. scissors (potentially ones that are made for children since they are safer)
  14. organization for your child’s supplies

As a side note, if your child is taking other extra curricular courses (ex. art, cooking, sewing, etc.), then other homeschool materials will be needed.

For grades 7th-12th:

  1. blank paper (either spiral notebooks or a binder with loose-leaf paper and dividers)
  2. pencils
  3. pencil sharpener (if necessary)
  4. pens (once again, colored pens can be fun)
  5. erasers
  6. note cards (both 3×5 and 4×6 if you would like your children to follow specific guidelines for completing a research paper)
**These can be used as study helps as well as keeping notes for research
  7. calculator
  8. protractor
  9. compass
  10. pencil pouch
  11. graph paper
  12. folders (for papers/projects/reports)
  13. paper clips (different colors if your kids would like!)
  14. dry erase boards/pens
  15. rulers
  16. subject dividers

Once again, if your child is taking extracurricular classes (cooking, physical education, sewing, keyboarding, etc.), then other supplies will be needed.

For you:

  1. black, blue, and red pens
  2. permanent markers
  3. a stapler
  4. paper clips
  5. scissors
  6. folders
  7. some form of planner
  8. white-out
  9. post-its
  10. glue
  11. calculator
  12. a place to organize all the grades
  13. a filing cabinet or organization system for all the grade books
  14. print paper
  15. laptop (it may not be necessary, but having a laptop is helpful for research needs for projects you will be helping your children with)

There you have it! I hope that these lists will serve as a foundational reference for homeschooling supplies for you and your children.

In addition to the items on this list, you may wish you have some highlighters, book covers, stickers of some sort for the younger ages, and other supplies that will help you personalize your homeschooling experience.

With all of that said, be creative and enjoy the ride!

Until next time
