“Music — what a powerful instrument, what a mighty weapon!” – Maria August von Trapp (link here)

We have all learned some form of song that has helped us remember something in our school work, whether that be the ABC song or the song for the Presidents of the US. With that in mind, how do we incorporate the power of music into our everyday homeschooling routines?

1. CDs/Audio programs.

I remember when my brothers were little, and my mom bought several of the Leap Frog movies. There are songs from these movies that we still sing in jest, but, the truth is, they work. If they did not, we would not still be singing them years later! In these movies, some of the music is kind of rocky, but if you use it as a resource, you can definitely take the songs and use them without the movies! The stories are also very educational, as well. As a side note, here, we watched the older ones and I cannot vouch for the newer ones (those made in the last ten years).

Another thing you can do is put some of your Bible verses or memorization lists to a song. My mom wrote a little song for Proverbs 20:11 when I was little, and I can still remember and sing it today.

With that said, I would also include different music CDs or audio programs into your homeschooling to encourage musical awareness. You never know if music will become your child’s passion or hobby!

2. Singing.

Sing together! A great way to include singing into your homeschooling would be to add it to your morning basket or Bible curriculum. I would definitely encourage singing together at some point in your day.

If any of your kids play musical instruments such as the piano or guitar, I would encourage you to have them play rhythm behind the singing. That said, if none of your children do play an instrument, then singing to a CD or even singing acapella would be great, as well.

3. Music lessons.

This suggestion may seem simple, but I think it is important for children to take some kind of music lessons even if it is just for a year. With some children, it may be easy to see that they have a natural gift for music, but for others, sometimes it takes music lessons to even uncover their potential. Because of this idea, I believe it is very important for children to take some kind of music lessons, whether they be guitar, piano, cello, or banjo. You have so many different options!

4. Games/Flashcards.

If you wish to teach your children the basics of music theory or foundations, there are different games you can find that include flash cards to aid learning. Playing games can be a great way to learn new things or really solidify different concepts in our minds. With that said, here are a few games/flashcards that you could incorporate into your homeschooling to help your children learn different aspects of music.

There are many different ways you could incorporate these flashcards into games. For example, you could have them use the second set of flashcards pictured as is demonstrated in the picture, or you could even have all of the flash cards in a pile and ask a student to find the quarter note in ten seconds or less. Having tasks like these made into a competition can make the learning/memorization even more enjoyable.

There are many different ways to incorporate music into your homeschooling on a day to day basis. Whether you decide to find a music teacher for your child, start singing every morning together as a family, or simply start having a quiet time at some point in the day to listen to a music CD or audio program, music can be an incredibly powerful resource to include in your homeschooling if used wisely.

I hope that some of these suggestions have been valuable and helpful for you!
