July 4th is just around the corner! Though not all of us may be doing school right now through the summer, I think that all of us can enjoy some fun and educational activities and studies around July 4th for kids. It is such a special holiday to celebrate and enjoy America, her rich history, and the patriotism that we are trying to instill in our littles. Here are a few ideas for how to celebrate July 4th with kids and as a homeschooling family!
1. July 4th themed music
Take time to make sure that your children know some of the classic patriotic songs including the national anthem, “My Country ‘Tis of Thee,” and maybe even “God Bless America” or “Statue of Liberty.” There are some beautiful tunes that have stood the test of time as classic songs in this nation’s history.
Here is a link to the song “Statue of Liberty” since I think it may be a lesser-known song:
It is a sweet song that ties together the Statue of Liberty as a symbol of America’s freedom for the American and the cross of Calvary as the symbol of freedom for the born-again Christian.
2. July 4th research projects
Though summer can be a great time to relax and simply enjoy the warmer weather or get involved in church camps, by the time July rolls around, you may be interested in engaging your children in some more educational activities. If that is you, you may be interested in taking advantage of July 4th as an opportunity to really focus on America’s history and founding fathers. Maybe you could have your child pick a founding father to study. They could read a few books about the character or even put together a research project complete with paper and a presentation. Feel free to use your own creativity here.
It may even be enjoyable to study the history of the songs that we mentioned earlier. Knowing the history behind the patriotic songs we sing and founding fathers that we talk about will help make history more real and personal to our littles.
3. Food/desserts for July 4th
Next up is foods or rather desserts that are focused on July 4th. The first fun activity I would like to bring up here is 4th of July food crafts for kids. Because the combination of red, white, and blue is so iconic for the American flag and 4th of July, there are a lot of fun food “crafts” we can pull together for this special holiday.
Here is our first easy dessert, and it’s a July 4th themed ice cream sandwich idea from Crafty Morning:
Here are some baking accessories to help with the red, white, and blue theme:)
4. Crafts
Though snacks are fun, maybe you would like to do some patriotic crafts with your kids. These ideas are good for children of many different ages and can also be modified for older or younger children.
5. Decorations
Lastly would be a few simple but pretty July 4th decorations to help everyone remember the holiday and get in the spirit. Though it is not necessary, it may be fun to purchase a few of these rather inexpensive decorations to use each year.
Here are a few of my favorites that I found 🙂

I sincerely hope that this post discussing ways to be more creative with how we make July 4th a special holiday for kids too has been both inspiring and fun. Before we know it, school will be starting back again, and, for that reason, I believe it is important to be intentional and live our lives to the fullest each and every day this summer. May we bring honor and glory to God in the way we choose to live our lives each and every day!
