3 Ways to Keep Homeschooling Fun

In this busy, fast-paced world in which we live, I know it can be so easy to get wrapped up in the daily grind. We wake up, eat breakfast, do school, try to keep the household functioning smoothly, make supper, get ready for bed, and start all over again tomorrow. When it comes down to it, we all know that school is work. It takes effort, energy, and hard work. Nevertheless, we want it to be fun, right? You want your kids to have fond memories of doing school at home. It should not all be boredom and the daily grind. So, how do we keep homeschooling fun?

1. Choose their projects wisely.

I am not positive how other curriculums work, but we always did Abeka Book, and they always provided many different projects for each grade to complete. In cases such as these, I encourage you to help your child pick a topic for their project that you know they are actually interested in. Pick a topic they will really enjoy. If your boy really likes studying cars, find him a book about cars that he can read for a book report. If your little girl loves horses, help her complete a research paper on horses. Find topics they really love and design their projects/reports around those topics.

If you need some guidance for how to create an effective project schedule, I would love for you to start with this post here entitled “3 Tips For Creating an Effective Project Schedule.”

2. Learn with them to keep homeschooling fun.

Do not do the work for them but work alongside them in order to make the learning more fun and interactive. When you help them with their work, your relationship will grow stronger, and you will also better understand your child’s weaknesses and strengths.

If they need to read a book for a book report, ask them about their book. Summarizing what they have read can really help them retain what they are reading, and you will have the opportunity to learn something new as well. Choose to learn with them and help them make connections with what they are learning.

3. Find unique ways to apply what they are learning.

I have found that many kids really enjoy hands-on learning which can be challenging with homeschooling since many different forms of equipment are either unavailable or incredibly expensive. With that in mind, there are still ways to help your kids apply what they are learning to their everyday lives.

To demonstrate this concept, I am reminded of a story I heard of this dad who would challenge his kids to use some of their vocabulary words in sentences throughout their days. He would keep them accountable for their words and help them find ways to use them correctly as they talked. By holding them accountable for their spelling words, he was not only helping them learn, but he was also helping their family keep homeschooling fun and practical.

It is so important for homeschooling to be enjoyable rather than something that is dreaded all the time. Though it really is hard work and, at times, a daily grind, there needs to be some joy and peace in the learning process. With that in mind, I hope that these tips have been helpful and that you have some new ideas to try in your homeschooling journey with your kids.
