Hello, friends! It is another hot, summer day over here in my part of the world. It has not been too busy, though, which has been nice after a busier week. It seems like we are nearing the end of the summer busyness for us, but I am sure that the fall will hold its own special activities and responsibilities. Life is never dull 😉
As we continue our journey of finding helpful homeschooling resources, specifically for the younger grades, I thought it would be helpful to pull together some more free worksheets. This time, we will be looking at sight words worksheets. Last week, I published a post all about high frequency words. If you missed that, I would encourage you to check it out HERE. In that post, we talked about what high frequency words are, the fry sight words or word lists, the dolch sight words list, and the difference between high frequency words versus sight words. I did also give a list of 50 high frequency words along with a graphic to condense the list. I hope that this post was helpful for you and your beginner readers.
That said, in today’s post, we will be focusing much more on sight words. Further on, you will see a collection of sight word worksheets that will enable you to put together your own sight word activities and printable activities. I believe that these printable worksheets will present a fun way to teach kindergarten sight words to your child while also enabling extra practice with these important words.
Just to clarify, the definition for a sight word is as follows:
“A sight word is a word that is instantly and effortlessly recalled from memory, regardless of whether it is phonically regular or irregular. A sight-word vocabulary refers to the pool of words a student can effortlessly recognize.” – David A. Kilpatrick, PhD (link HERE)
I love that definition of a sight word due to the all inclusivity of it. It can be easy to think that a sight word is only one that does not follow regular rules of spelling, but this definition says that a sight word is any word that can be “instantly and effortlessly recalled from memory” (David A. Kilpatrick, PhD, link HERE). Words like cat, hat, read, see, I, they, dad, mom, dog, what, and baby can all be sight words. That said, for adults, many of the words we read are actually sight words since our brains have learned to see words and know what they are without actually sounding them out in our minds (The Measured Mom, link HERE). It is really pretty neat to think about.
If a list of different sight words would be helpful for you and your littles, please let me know in the comments below, and I will consider putting a post together on that topic 🙂 That said, without further adieu, here is a collection of 25+ free sight word worksheets that you can print at home!
